Climate Change Means More Floods in Future
Thursday, September 15th, 2011
The year 2011 may seem to be a particularly harsh year for natural disasters in the USA — and the weather to date has indeed been unusually destructive, with much of the hurricane season still before us. However, this trend of increasingly frequent weather-related catastrophes may not be the result of a natural cycle but rather the consequence of man-made climate change.
Most experts agree that the increase in flooding and heavy precipitation events is likely caused by climate change, and warn that flooding disasters will become more and more common in the future. 97% of scientists publishing on this subject are convinced that human activity is to blame for global warming, which is causing both flooding and drought- often in the same region. Unfortunately, computer climate simulation models predict that flooding events will not only increase in frequency, but will become considerably larger in scope than what we have seen so far.
Due to human activity and pollution, the atmosphere is getting warmer at an alarming rate. A warmer atmosphere is capable of holding more water, and therefore produces more precipitation. In addition, as ocean water heats up, it expands and encroaches ever further into coastal regions. In this scenario, flood protection becomes critically important in these areas.
In a world threatened by frequent extreme flooding events that are predicted to increase in scope and damage, it is prudent to put into place preemptive measures that will protect assets and resources before disaster strikes. Properly designed commercial flood panels or barriers can protect businesses from devastating damage of goods and structures, even as neighboring buildings are completely inundated.
As climate change makes flooding a recurring and permanent fact of life, those who take action now will find that the investment will pay off many times over.
